Playa del Carmen Diving Information
Frequently Asked Questions
Whether you`re new to the aquatic life or an experienced diver, we've got you covered at Vida Aquatica!
If you don't find your answer here or have a question, please get in touch with us.
What types of watersports are available?
Vida Aquatica is a full-service dive center that offers more than just diving. Join one of our snorkel tours to the reefs of the Mexican Caribbean, where you'll be surrounded by tropical fish, or take a trip with us to the magical cenotes where you find the clearest water you've ever seen and stunning natural formations. When you feel like getting off the beach, rent one of our kayaks or paddle boards to see Playa from a different perspective. For the fishing enthusiast, we offer fishing tours that depart right from our beach shop.
Do you have kid-friendly activities?
We offer several activities catering to children, such as snorkeling tours, fishing trips, paddle boarding, kayaking and beginning dive lessons. The "Discover Scuba Diving" course is offered to children 10 years and older and introduces kids to the amazing underwater world on the reefs of Playa del Carmen.
Can I go diving even if I've never been diving before?
Absolutely! The Discover Scuba Diving course is designed for those who've never been diving and want to see what it's like to explore underwater. The course is a half-day program that includes some dive theory, skills practice in the pool and a dive on our reefs with an instructor.
How long does it take to get certified?
For Open Water Diver certification, the course takes 4 days.
How large are your groups?
We like to keep our groups small so we can offer individualized service and get to know our divers. For advanced or deep dives, a group of 6 certified divers are with the instructor who is the guide. For easier dives, 8 certified divers is the maximum.
Do you have facilities to wash and store my dive gear?
The dive center has rinse tanks to wash gear after dives and storage lockers to store personal dive equipment.
When is the best time of year to go diving?
It's always perfect for diving in the Riviera Maya - we've got amazing marine life and fantastic dive sites year round. Every season has its highlights - from mid-June to mid-September, you can swim with the whale sharks, the biggest fish in the world. During the winter months, the bull sharks are on our reefs and are a common sight on reef dives.
What is a cenote?
Extensive underwater cave systems penetrate the Yucatan Peninsula. Where a cave ceiling has collapsed, a sinkhole is created, forming a natural entrance to the caves. In Mexico such a sinkhole is called a cenote from the Mayan word dz´onot (sacred well). The cenotes are a freshwater dive with water so clear that feels like you are floating on air as you glide past stalactites, stalagmites and other spectacular formations that decorate the caverns and cave zones.
